Hello Crosscut Saw Fans,

Here is an informative e-mail about upcoming and ongoing Crosscut Saw opportunities. Please read on and there are ways to find out more in the e-mail. Enjoy!

Here is a list of training opportunities to hone your crosscut skillset:

  1. University of Montana free online training course: The Crosscut Sawyer. See: http://www.umt.edu/crosscut-sawyer/
  2. Dolly Chapman's Crosscut Saw Sharpening Course. Classes are held in Calpine, California. The next classes are scheduled for March 15-17 and March 18-20. See: http://thesca.org/connect/events for more details. A carpool could be arranged if enough people from western Oregon are interested. PCTA has extra tool sets and saw vices.
  3. Intermediate Saw Sharpening Workshop. Held in the PCTA saw shop in Estacada, this workshop is available during the months of January-April. Each participant will complete the restoration of a vintage crosscut saw alongside a more experienced sharpener. One weekend day and one weekday per week are set aside for classes. There is room for two students to work in the shop each day. This is good preparation for Dolly Chapman's class.

**For more information on any of the above three classes, contact: droe@pcta.org

  1. Mt. Hood (Estacada) Saw Training and Certification Weekend. This certification event is focused on crosscut sawyers. This year the event will be held Saturday April 3 for recertifications and Saturday-Sunday April 3-4 for initial certifications. See http://www.pcta.org/volunteer/trail-skills-college/saw-training/estacada-saw-training-and-certification-weekend/ for details.
  2. Crosscut saw certification will also be available at the Wind River Saw Training and Certification Weekend to be held April 29 – May 1, 2016. See: http://www.pcta.org/volunteer/trail-skills-college/saw-training/volunteertrail-skills-collegecolumbia-cascades-saw-skills-college/ for details
  3. Basic Saw Crew Training available at the Columbia Cascades Trail Skills College. See http://www.pcta.org/volunteer/trail-skills-college/ for details.
  4. Gorge logouts: Keep an eye out for crosscut logouts in the Gorge this winter. If you are interested in becoming a crosscut sawyer, working alongside an experienced journeyman or instructor may be one of the best ways to learn. For upcoming trips, see: http://www.longtrails.com/mthood/

Good luck and have fun out there,

Tammy
