Date: December 2nd 2015
Hey folks,
Here is a chance to not only get in a great winter hike in Eagle Creek but to get muddy and install a gabion near High Bridge.
We need 6 volunteers on Monday December 14th to build a gabion (think chicken wire box filled with rocks) to fix the trail that has been eroded by hikers taking a short cut down to the creek and we are now down
to less than 2 feet of trail. So come join us and have some fun.
We will start around 8 a.m. and get back to the cars by 4:30 p.m. Our work location will be about a
3 1/2 mile hike each way so, 7 miles total and about 600’ elevation gain.
You will need to bring snacks and hydration for the day and of course remember it is winter so something warm to drink and lots of calories might be good.
Please dress for the location and time of year. The Gorge can be a LOT colder than Portland with surprise rain, wind and clouds so dressing in layers, with an extra set of warm gloves, warm hat/ear protection, rain gear, warm long pants/
long sleeve shirt and warm water proof closed toe boots are a must. Please no cotton layers, we don’t need anyone getting hyperthermia!
In addition please bring a headlamp and/or flash light with fresh batteries.
It’s also not a bad idea to have a fresh clean set of warm cloths in the car for the drive home.
We will provide hard hats, work gloves, and all the tools needed, plus any instructions as well. Feel free to bring your own hard hats and gloves if you like.
Cancelation - We will review the Gorge forecast a few days before and early morning of the hike. If it looks too wet, icy or windy we will re schedule. So we will need your phone number when you sign up for the crew, as we will call
you to let you know of any cancelation.
The crew leader is Lamar Fontaine, with very expert help from Forest Service folks – Edan Lira and Dawn Stender
Ok this is a great time of year to get out into the Gorge and really do something to make a diffidence in improving the highly traveled Eagle Creek trail. Sound like fun?? Hit reply or send me an e-mail at
tturner@pcta.org and I’ll get you on the list for the fun & muddy crew!
