A fuel break was originally proposed as adjacent to the PCT near the Warm Springs Reservation. Thanks to Dana Berthold for her active role in encouraging the USFS to choose the alternative that provides the most protection for the PCT.

(from the Environmental Assessment)

"4.2.2.3 Trails - The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail is adjacent to the proposed fuel break. There would be a 50-foot buffer between the fuel break and the trail. Approximately 2.8 miles of the trail parallel the proposed fuel break within a distance of as close as 50 feet to as far as 1000 feet between Triangle Lake Horse Camp and Head Lake. The fuel break would be close enough to be seen from the trail along approximately 1 mile in three sections."

The alternative chosen in the decision, Alternative C, drops most of the section of the fuel break that would have impacted the PCT.  The fuel break might still be partially visible for about 1 mile between Triangle Lake and the powerlines, but no fuel break will be cut south of the powerlines 2.4 miles to Olallie Lake.
