2010 PCTA Trail Crew Naming Contest
Help Us Rename the Windigo Volunteer Crew

Over the last two years a joint crew of U.S. Forest Service, PCTA staff and community volunteers has tended the PCT tread from Diamond Peak to Mt. Jefferson in Oregon. Originally nicknamed the 'Windigo Crew' after Windigo Pass in the Oregon Cascade Recreation Area, this crew is now expanding to two crews and they need new names!  We'll still offer an independent backpacking crew. But, in addition, we'll offer a crew with a dedicated cook, pack stock support, and longer trips. Both crews will have plenty of physically challenging and rewarding tread work to do in magnificent places.

Help name the trail crews and win a Gregory JetStream LTS pack!

Why not 'Windigo'?
First, legend of the Algonquian and other northern tribes has it that the Windigo is a type of aggressive, cannibalistic being that overtakes people who stray too long in the woods. The trail crew may be hungry and smelly after their trips in the woods, but it's not fair to call them cannibals, zombies or giant ogres, as the various legends tell us. Second, this trail crew works along a 160-mile stretch of the PCT, not just near Windigo Pass. This name made sense when the crew first organized to work primarily in that area, but now they are expanding to all of mid-Oregon.

So, help us create TWO names for these crews. We're looking for names that reflect their character of fun, good company, hard work, camaraderie, and the spectacular experiences of the High Cascades.

What to do:
  • Create a name for each trail crew.
  • Send in your ideas for crew names to idaniel@pcta.org (Maximum two entries per person)
  • PCTA staff will choose their favorite name for each crew.
A prize will be awarded for each of the chosen names.
  • The contest ends February 15, so send your entries in soon.
